How to rank in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in 2026
This is a practical guide. Five moves, in priority order, that decide whether ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini cite your brand when buyers ask category questions. Timeline expectations included so you know when to check the trendline.
This is not a theoretical guide. The moves below are the top items on the Mythos AEO playbook, which has been shipped to paying customers since launch. They are what works.
Ship crawler-visible content
The move: Make sure your homepage's first H1 and primary product description are in the initial HTML response — not injected by JavaScript after hydration.
Why it matters: Most AI answer engine crawlers either do not execute JavaScript at all or do so inconsistently. A React SPA that renders "Loading..." as the first H1 in the initial HTML is, from the engine's perspective, a page about loading. The real content never reaches the index.
How to verify: Curl your homepage with the Googlebot user-agent. Look at the first H1 in the raw HTML response. If it matches your actual product headline, you are clear. If it says "Loading..." or is empty, you have an SSR/prerender gap.
Timeline to see impact: 1–4 weeks for the engines to re-crawl and re-index. Fastest wins available in the AEO playbook.
Deploy structured data (schema.org)
The move: Add Organization, WebSite, Product or Service, SoftwareApplication (if applicable), FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList JSON-LD blocks to your core templates.
Why it matters: Structured data is the most reliable way to give AI engines a machine-readable statement of "this is a named product in this category with these properties." Engines use schema to disambiguate brand entities from generic content and to decide what to cite when asked a product-level question.
How to verify: Run the page through Google's Rich Results Test. If it parses clean with no errors, you are good. Check for duplicate @type blocks — having two FAQPage schemas on one page will trigger a validation error and devalue both.
Timeline to see impact: 2–8 weeks. Structured data compounds over time as engines re-crawl and rebuild their knowledge graph.
Build citation surface on third-party sites
The move: Submit your product to G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, ProductHunt, and the two or three industry-specific directories that matter in your vertical. For most B2B categories, this is 5–10 citations that actually move the needle.
Why it matters: AI engines weight third-party mentions heavily because they function as independent validation. A brand mentioned 10 times across independent sites in category-relevant contexts wins against a brand mentioned 500 times on its own blog. The engines can tell the difference.
How to verify: Search "your brand + category" on Google. Look at the top 20 results. If more than half of them are your own properties, you have a citation gap. The top 20 should be a mix of your site, review sites, industry press, and comparison content.
Timeline to see impact: 4–12 weeks. Citations take time to compound because engines discover them on staggered crawl cycles.
Publish comparison and authority content
The move: Write "[Your brand] vs [Competitor]" pages for your top 3 competitors, a "What is [category]" explainer, and a "How to [category action]" guide. Each page should target a specific verbatim query a buyer would type.
Why it matters: When a buyer asks an engine "alternatives to [competitor]" or "what is [category]", the engine retrieves from pages that use that exact terminology. A comparison page with clean structured data, specific competitor claims, and a clear positioning statement is exactly the retrieval target these queries hit.
How to verify: Query each page's target prompt in ChatGPT and Claude directly. Do you appear? If not, check: does the page have the verbatim query terms in H1 and first paragraph? Does it have FAQPage schema? Does it link from your homepage?
Timeline to see impact: 4–12 weeks for fresh content. Faster if the content has strong on-page signals and internal links.
Strengthen entity signals
The move: Make sure your company has a clean LinkedIn page, a Crunchbase entry, founder public bylines, and where possible a Wikipedia entry (product Wikipedia entries are hard to qualify for; company ones are easier).
Why it matters: Entity signals feed the engine's internal knowledge graph — the structured representation of "what is this brand, who runs it, what does it make, who are its competitors." Without entity signals, the engine has to reason about you from scratch every time a query mentions your name, which is when hallucinations happen.
How to verify: Ask an AI answer engine "what do you know about [your brand]." Is the response accurate? If the engine fabricates founder names, product features, or category classifications, your entity signal is weak.
Timeline to see impact: 8–26 weeks. Entity signals are the slowest of the five moves but have the largest long-term impact on retrieval quality.
What to do first
If you are starting from zero and picking one move, pick structured data. It is cheap, fast, and gives every other move a stronger foundation.
If you have structured data already, pick citations. Two weeks of focused citation submission work will outperform two quarters of content marketing on AEO metrics.
If you have both, invest in entity signals and authority content simultaneously. These are the moves that compound into category ownership over 6–12 months.
How to measure progress
The only way to know AEO is working is to ask the engines directly. Query your category terms in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini every month and log the results. If your mention rate is rising, the moves are working. If not, something upstream is broken.
Mythos Monitor automates this — same 20 queries every month with founder-reviewed change notes — but the methodology is the point, not the tool. The brands that invest in AEO measurement now will own the category defaults their competitors spend years trying to unseat.
